FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: When should I book my session?
A: The more notice the better, especially for Newborn sessions. At least a month in advance is preferred, but just contact me as soon as possible and we'll work out a time and date that works for both of us.
Q: How soon after birth should Newborn photos be taken?
A: I recommend booking a session within the first 2 weeks of your baby's life. That is the period in which it is easiest to get those pictures of curled up, sleepy babies you see in my portfolio. The less time time they've been out of the womb, the more comfortable they will be in these types of positions, and the longer they will sleep without being disturbed. If you are thinking about booking a session but your baby is already born, no problem! We can still do a studio newborn session up to about 8 weeks and we will still get a lot of adorable photos, however the gallery will most likely include more photos of your baby wrapped and awake than sleepy and naked/in outfits.
Q: Do you have any tips for preparing for a Newborn session?
A: Yes I do! I will email you my newborn prep packet when our session is booked. This packet is full of helpful information on what to expect from the session as well as tips to prepare for a successful session.
Q: Do you offer Birth Photography
A: I hope to offer this service in the future, but due to scheduling obligations, I cannot currently be on call for births. I do, however, offer "Fresh 48" sessions, which means I will come to the hospital after the birth of your baby, within the first 48 hours, and photograph your first few days as a family in a documentary style.
Q: When is the best time to schedule family photos for holiday cards?
A: Since the fall season is my busiest time of year and my turnaround time is around 3-4 weeks at this time, I recommend scheduling your family portrait session to take place by mid November if you intend to use your photos for holiday cards.
Q: What do you recommend wearing for family portraits?
A: I recommend putting together outfits that coordinate but aren't too "matchy-matchy" for your session. One way to do this is to pick a color family such as jewel tones, pastels, neutrals, etc. and let everyone choose an outfit within that family. It's important that each person feel comfortable and confident in what they are wearing, so allowing for personal style choices is great when possible. Avoid neon colors, clothing with writing on it, and loud patterns. Remember that shoes are a part of your overall look and will appear in many of the photos, so don't leave them out of your planning! I have a Pinterest board of inspiration to aid your family portrait fashion decisions that I will send to you once our session is booked, and I'm happy to look at pictures of the outfits you're considering and give you my feedback.
Q: Where should we take our Family Photos?
A: There are so many beautiful locations in the Los Angeles area we can choose from! I love shooting in the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu for more rustic looking shoots. There are also, of course, many great beach locations (Venice, Santa Monica, South Bay, Malibu). And let's not forget parks and urban locations local to your neighborhood. It's great to shoot at a place that is significant to your family in some way. I'm willing to travel to the San Fernando Valley for no additional cost, and further destinations such as Joshua Tree are an option with a small additional travel fee. Since some locations do require obtaining a permit before shooting there, we need to make sure we plan with enough time to accommodate this process if you are interested in these locations. So whether you're interested in capturing your family as they stroll down the streets of Beverly Hills or wade through the tall grass at Malibu Creek State Park, we can plan a perfect session at the location that works for you!
Q: What if we want photos taken in our home?
A: At home lifestyle sessions are a possibility! However since I'm unfamiliar with the lighting conditions of your home, I usually recommend thinking of other options if at all possible. Plus, if we choose an alternative location, you don't have to worry about making your home look perfectly presentable in addition to already making sure your family looks that way! But if a documentary, lifestyle look is more your style, your home is a great place for a session of this type and we can plan the best way to capture you there. Posed newborn sessions are not available in the home due to the amount of equipment, lighting, props, and accessories they require, but lifestyle newborn sessions featuring the family interacting together in a natural way are another great way to commemorate this exciting time in your family's life.
Q: Do you provide digital files?
A: Yes. While the files are not included with your session fee, I'm happy to make digital files a part of every collection available for purchase. I follow a Create Your Own Collection model, so no one is stuck purchasing a pre-made collection of a bunch of items they don't actually want, but instead can customize their order to be perfectly tailored to their needs. After you have viewed your images at our ordering session, we will follow a two-step process to create a collection. First, you will choose how many high resolution digital files you would like to purchase. They are available in bundles or 5, 10, or 15 images, or you can choose to buy all the images from your session. Then, you'll add on one or more pieces of printed artwork to your collection. If desired, you can then add on extras like the digital slideshow, birth announcements and small prints. You'll leave our ordering session with any digitals you purchase that day on a custom USB drive, and I will design and order the rest of your products and deliver them to your door when they arrive.
